It’s raining cats and dogs.

I like this one but I hardly ever hear it anymore, is it still used much?  and why cats and dogs?  why not sheep and cows or something? cheese

It’s probably rather English (my childhood!) and you’re right, it doesn’t seem to be much used in Australia though it still is in England.  I don’t know where it came from, perhaps someone will post an answer giving the derivation.

I’ve just quickly looked it up and one possible explanation is that it started in the 17th Century in England, when the streets were dirty and heavy rain might sometimes carry dead animals down the street.
a possibility maybe?
