I think ‘Bugger’ became more popular in our language after the TV advert that used the word ‘bugga’ several times. It was a clever advert, although I personally detest the use of the word!

I haven’t heard “hells spells” before but have heard “hells bells”. Perhaps “hells spells” is a derivative of “hells bells” or someone has mis-heard someone saying “hells bells” and thought they said “hells spells”?????
