Ideas for Teaching
Every Week
- Spend 20mins learning a block of the Top 50 (eg. 1-10, 11-20). Practice some selected expressions & show class – funny! Do the same for the Top 50 Workplace.
- 10-15 mins each week, learn the Phrase of the Week (More) & discuss. Go to Forum and post a reply to the Phrase of the Week topic. Later this can be extended to also responding to the replies of other students (using quotes).
- Listen to a new anecdote every week (video). Do a search for expressions heard in the video & do the activities.
- Got more suggestions? Post them in the Forum under Teacher Tips and we’ll add them here!
Now & Then
- After having learnt the Top 50, do the cloze activities
- Respond to other Forum topics
- Search for expressions using Search tool. If not there, put them into the Forum as suggestions to be added to the website.
- Create own Forum topic for others to respond, it may be a question or problem with English or a funny anecdote regarding English or Australia.
- Teacher can post a new topic for students to reply in their own time – for homework. Eg, teachers could choose an expression and ask students to give example sentences using the expression. Or teachers can create a topic with a survey, perhaps giving various options of responses to an expression and students have to select the best response.
